העתיד כבר כאן: מחקרים עדכניים באקלים, חברה ומדיניות
ב-4 בינואר 2022 התקיים כנס של ביה"ס ללימודי חברה ומדיניות באוניברסיטת תל אביב העתיד כבר כאן: מחקרים עדכניים באקלים, חברה ומדיניות. הכנס משקף את העניין המחקרי הגובר במשבר האקלים בקרב מדעני חברה בארץ ובעולם, ומבקש לקחת חלק בקידומה של תפנית אינטלקטואלית וציבורית זו.
הכנס נפתח בדבריה של גב' תמר זנדברג, השרה להגנת הסביבה, שהפתיעה את באי הכנס בהצהרתה על תכנית מלגות חדשה, בהיקף של מיליון ש״ח לשנה, לתמיכה במחקרי אקלים של סטודנטים מתקדמים במדעי החברה. הרצאת האורח בכנס ניתנה על ידי פרופ' טימונס רוברטס, חוקר מוביל של פוליטיקת אקלים, ומקים ״רשת חוקרי האקלים במדעי החברה״, באוניברסיטת בראון, ארה"ב. פרופ׳ רוברטס דיבר על האתגרים, ההזדמנויות והאחריות האינטלקטואלית והמוסרית של מדעני חברה בהקשר של משבר אקלים גלובלי, וסקר מגמות ויוזמות עכשוויות בתחום זה, בארה״ב ובעולם.
בכנס גם הוצגו מחקרי אקלים עדכניים במדעי החברה והתקיים דיון על מדיניות אקלים בישראל. חוקרות וחוקרים במדעי חברה הרצו על השפעת משבר האקלים על שיעורי הפשע, מדיניות ניסיונית להגבלת טביעת הרגל הפחמנית האישית, תפקידן של ערים בהתמודדות עם המשבר, והמכשולים בפני מעבר לכלכלה נקייה בפוליטיקת האקלים הגלובלית. במושב המדיניות, מנכ״לית המשרד להגנת הסביבה, האחראי לפיתוח מודלים ומדיניות ארוכת טווח במשרד האנרגיה, מנכ״ל איגוד הגז הטבעי בישראל, מנכ״ל איגוד חברות אנרגיה ירוקה לישראל ומנכ״לית 'מרכז השל' מן החברה האזרחית הציגו נקודות מבט שונות על הדרך הנכונה עבור המדינה להתקדם לעבר כלכלה דלת פחמן.
The conference The Future is Here: Recent Studies in Climate, Society and Policy of the School of Social and Policy Studies at Tel Aviv University was held on January 4, 2022. It responds to the growing research interest in the climate crisis among social scientists in Israel and the world and seeks to participate in the promotion of that intellectual and public turn. The conference began with remarks by Mrs. Tamar Zandberg, Minister of Environmental Protection, who surprised the audience by announcing a new scholarships program, in the amount of one million NIS a year, to support climate research by graduate students in the social sciences.
The keynote lecture was given by Prof. Timmons Roberts, a leading scholar of climate politics and founder of the Climate Social Science Network, at Brown University. Prof. Roberts talked about the challenges, opportunities, and intellectual and moral responsibilities of social scientists in the context of a climate crisis. He reviewed current trends and initiatives in this field around the world.
Two more sessions were devoted to recent climate research by Israeli social scientists and to a climate policy discussion among government, industry, and civil society representatives. In the first session, social scientists presented studies on the impact of global heating on crime patterns, experimental policies to limit personal carbon footprint, the role of cities in abating the crisis, and about forces in global climate politics preventing change. In the policy session, the CEO of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, senior analyst in the Ministry of Energy, and the CEOs of the Israel Natural Gas Association, the Israel Green Energy Association, and the 'Heschel Center' civil society think-tank engaged in a heated yet well-informed debate about such issues as the future of natural gas production and the potential conflict between renewable energy production and landscape conservation.
