1036.4018.01 Media and Migration:  From Representations to Appropriations
Prof. Jerome Bourdon & Dr. Gisela Dachs

This course will cover the two main approaches used to study the relations between media and migration. It will start with a discussion of the representations of migrants in the mainstream media of the country of arrival, and move to the way the migrants use digital media to face the experience of migration, communicate with their country of origin, and, in some cases, fight the mainstream representations imposed on them.           

 

1036.4017.01 Forced Migration and the Humanitarian System 
Chamutal Afek-Eitam

This module provides an introduction to reasoning’s behind forced migration, and aims to provide students with a broad understanding of the various humanitarian reasons and realities behind migration. The course establishes the foundations of the humanitarian system and by this ensures understanding of the structural, historical, and political origins of migration. Using case studies the module highlights the relationship between the international aid system, underdevelopment and migration and touches upon some of its current challenges.   
 

1036.4020.01  European Politics and Migration
Ina Kubbe ​

​More than a million migrants and refugees crossed into Europe since 2015. Yet, this was not the first wave of migration and Europe’s governments and citizens are still looking for ways how to face and meet the challenges and opportunities involved. The main purpose of this course is to provide students with an overview of the politics of migration in contemporary Europe. From a comparative perspective, we will have a look at Europe’s actors, the role of institutions, policies, policy-making, public opinion and certain issues and debates over migration in different countries. The course seeks to answer the following major questions: (1) what are the causes, effects and challenges of migration in European countries and (2) how do policy makers respond to these effects?​
