Michael Crosby has worked in the union movement for nearly 40 years as organiser, union leader, General Secretary of a Union International, educator and the Director of the Australian Council of Trade Unions' Organising Centre. In this last role, with others, he was responsible for identifying the threat to union influence in Australia and crafting a strategic response. He has worked with many Australian unions in their revival strategies and that experience saw him in 2005 write his book, “Power at Work – rebuilding the Australian union movement.
From 2005 he was the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Regional Organising Director and in that capacity was the coordinator of the Clean Start campaign in 2005/6.
In 2007/8 he chaired the Irish unions' Commission of Review. Between 2008 and 2010 he worked in Amsterdam as the first Director of the Change to Win Organizing Center supporting union renewal in Europe. He returned to Australia in 2010 and became the National President of United Voice where he led the Big Steps campaign with the aim of organising Australia’s 60,000 early childhood educators.
He now works for SEIU and is assigned as an adviser to the Board of FNV – the large recently created Dutch union.
