The pragmatist action model posits that actors tend to act more habitually in the face of familiar situations and by exercising greater creativity when encountering novelty. But actors can err in their assessments of situational familiarity, and these errors are often socially patterned and consequential. In this chapter we develop a theory of problem situation misassessment and illustrate its explanatory potential by examining the case of the 2007-8 financial crisis

Neil Gross is a professor of sociology at Colby College in Maine, where Albion Small got his start before moving to the University of Chicago. A former editor of Sociological Theory, Gross works on theory, intellectuals, higher education, and criminal justice
