The American Passport: Citizenship and Belonging in the Age of Global Empire
What does US citizenship signify outside the USA in contexts shaped by a history of its global power? What do transnational experiences and imaginaries around US citizenship tell us about the American empire today? How do they shed light on the institution of national citizenship in a world that is increasingly connected, unequal and unpredictable? This talk explores the transnational allure of US citizenship in everyday practices and imaginaries of ordinary individuals, based on interviews with Turkish families who give birth to their children in the United States, Turkish-American citizens, and natural-born US citizens who have chosen to live in Turkey. Through their stories, it demonstrates how being an American citizen plays a significant role in identity negotiations around and claims of modernity and cosmopolitanism outside of the USA. It reveals how people value US citizenship because it can facilitate safe exit from crisis situations, seamless passage across national borders at any time, and upward mobility in most of the world
