יום עיון: השלטון המקומי בישראל – מי משרת אותך?

As Chief of Staff to San Antonio, Texas Mayor Julian Castro, I was part of the team that helped create SA 2020, a bottom-up visioning process that engaged and inspired thousands of citizens to dream about how the city of San Antonio could be at its best in the year 2020.  Education was listed as a top priority.  About one year later, I had the privilege of helping Mayor Castro campaign for Pre-K 4 SA, an election that would increase the sales tax to fund high-quality, full-day pre-kindergarten education for 4 year-old children who otherwise would not receive it.  I will discuss how true civic engagement can produce political victories, new policies, and an improved quality of life.
