David FitzGerald is Professor of Sociology at the University of California, San Diego. He is also Chair in U.S.-Mexican Relations and Co-Director of the Center for Comparative Immigration Studies. His research analyzes policies regulating international migration in countries of origin, transit, and destination. His books include Culling the Masses: The Democratic Roots of Racist Immigration Policy in the Americas (2014) and A Nation of Emigrants: How Mexico Manages its Migration (2008). His current project focuses on the "remote control" policies that rich Western nations employ to keep potential asylum seekers out of their territories.
